Background

Have you ever thought about decorating your home during wfh period?

As our workplace has been shifting to remote mode or hybrid, we stay at home much longer than before. The more time we spend at home the more irritated we are with cluttered, boring or even depressing space.

An online marketplace for artists, Etsy,  reported that the searches for wall art increased 95% in 2020, the year we started wfh, compared to the previous year!

When I was searching for wall arts, tons of art pieces pop up with totally different look and prices that ranging from 20 - 5000 dollars. I had no idea how to choose one for my home. How big and what style to choose? It even got dozens of options for the frame. That raised a question to me. Is there a way to find wall art without effort but still matching our home style or the styles we like?

After talk to my artist friend, I found them are actually struggling with make a living by selling their work. I do wanna help them by creating a tool that could fasten the selling process.

Inspiration

I got some inspiration from 2 apps. If we can visualize the look of the wall art in the room, just like the Redecor app,

Research

I did a quick quick desktop research to get to know the industry and the situation of the market.

Result Summary

User Feedback got from Youtube

I got some insights from the youtube comments. They are the real target audience who went into problems and checked out tutorials for answers. Even with the video tutorial, they still find it's hard to get the right wall art for their home.

User Interview

With the insights from the comments, I conducted user interviews with users in different roles. They are consumer, artist, and interior designer who will need to buy lots of art for projects.

Competitor Analysis

Synthesize

Is AR the best answer to visualization?

Major competitors provide AR to help users visualize the look after virtual placement. But after trying this features on their apps, I found the problems.

  1. Not as immersive as thought
  2. Always need to redo the steps to map out the different piece of art
  3. Visualized size is not confirmative
  4. Not easy to mange and match all the pieces for different space in a house

Solution

  1. Visualization
    a. AR to visualize the right size
    b. Prototype of wall art placement
    c. Holistic interface to view all room progress
  2. Feeds of art pieces in a set (Suggestion)
  3. Feeds of style knowledges

Reflection

Little things matters! But keep adding little things make the design even more complicated. Through the way, always think about if there's a way to hide the design but keep the functionality work still.

The 3 flow of this project are quite different in terms of patterns. The better way to design a new layout could be: draw intuitively -> search the possible patterns -> synthesize for a better way -> simply ask someone to test on the low-fi ->continuously iterate and repeat from the beginning to the end if necessary

Keep workplaces organized is very important. Stop and organize the files often to clear out not only the unused files but also clear the mind to a clearer goal.
